Once upon a time, on a lush, fragrant Sydney night, a Scottish engineer and a Kiwi writer met and didn't fall in love.
He was quiet but confident. She was outgoing but shy.
Although they liked and continued to see each other, it was clearly never going to work.
He built enormous gas processing plants; she grew vegetables and wrote short fiction. He was your typical immovable object; she was your standard irresistible force.
After five years, they married so they could throw a big party and get on each other’s nerves more conveniently. Five years after that, they bought a wild and splendid 25-hectare property in New Zealand’s Nelson Lakes region. Two years later they moved there permanently and resolved to teach themselves how to farm—despite having no farming background or, indeed, any knowledge of the agricultural and pastoral arts at all.
Finally, 20 years after that Sydney party, they decided to integrate all the different aspects of their lives—those things they fed and which fed them, like their careers, the farm, their relationship and home life—and go into business together. They called the business Bold Communications.
Because they were successfully living their dream, they could pool all their considerable skills and experience as a copywriter and technical writer to help bring other people closer to living their own.
And everyone lived happily ever after.
Why choose Bold?
Because too many brilliant businesses sell themselves short with under-performing website content and technical documents no-one wants to read. We can help with that.
Also, we're pretty nice and we have mad skills.
We follow one guiding principle: to leave things better than we found them. This covers everything, from how we farm to how we conduct business.
And we're committed to sustainability. We use digital technology to work remotely wherever possible and we're constantly looking for ways to minimise our environmental footprint.
We're going to love working together if your venture:
Niki: Creative genius
A former New Zealand champion dancer who now struts her stuff in the kitchen, Niki hails from Christchurch.
She's always been a writer and was an early adopter of blogging. Her humour blog, Hot Water, was nominated Best Australian Weblog for three consecutive years. This led to a job as a radio presenter with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, which was hell stressful but a lot of fun.
Since returning to New Zealand in 2011, Niki has freelanced as a copywriter, content marketer and journalist. She's a qualified photographer and is currently learning karate and te reo Māori.
Niki loves the creative process. Her mission is to inspire other people to love it too so they can use it to enrich their lives and help their businesses grow and prosper.
Ewan: Technical wizard
Quite possibly the most likeable man on the planet, Ewan grew up in Scotland. He left the Land of the Thistle with a Masters degree in Manufacturing Sciences and Engineering from Strathclyde University.
He spent the next 25 years in various engineering and construction project management roles in the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand, with budgets ranging from AUD1 million to AUD15 billion.
After returning to New Zealand he navigated a massive learning curve to become a farmer. He has been working in the Marlborough wine industry since 2015.
Ewan is a highly-skilled technical writer with years of experience to draw on. He loves making complex procedures simple and using as few words as possible. This makes him an enduring mystery to his wife.
